Hi,
How prevelant is the need to remagnetize the 802-8d?
And could GPA handle this?

Compare output levels with another. If you have a pair, and they both sound (or peferably, measure) the same, they're probably OK. The most likely cause of demagnetization for HF drivers is mechanical shock, as in being dropped to a hard surface, as overheating is very unlikely.

Sure can, but as in re-diaphraming, it should be done in pairs, to ensure equal performance.

Hi there,,Alnico magnets shouldn't loose any strength from dropping them. The usual cause is over powering the voice coils which causes chages in the polarity of the magnet electricly. Ferett magnets can loose big time when dropped or just being bumped around as band equipment gets moving the boxes from place to place. The magnet particals go out of alignment and scatter inside the magnets structure and looses it's ability to keep it's poles lined up. As for the nickel mags., from the older speakers they can be recharged at a motor rewinding shop or magneto reapair shop in a few minutes . The feritt magnets are useless after loosing there guass. Just one great thing about older speakers and I think they sound better than the feritt mag.,speakers as they get older and a bit weaker the sound becomes more mellow as in tube equipment.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Ron

Have you got any proof of any of your claims? I have never heard any thing like that before, did you have your coffee and morning donut before you wrote that stuff? Alnico could be demagintized by a hard drop but you would most likely see proof by a good dent in the driver, and they can be charged up again as well. And I have never heard of a ferite losing it's charge unless you were to degauss it.

Nor have I. Ferrite pretty much stays as is. Alnico can suffer from drops. I have never seen or heard of a dead altec ferrite driver. But what do I know,I have only been aware of them for over 30 years.
